Hedgehogs have lived alongside humans for millions of years, yet today they are increasingly under pressure. As natural landscapes disappear and gardens become more sterile and heavily managed, hedgehogs lose food, shelter, and safe pathways. Many dangers are not intentional, but they are everywhere: garden machinery, sealed fences, traffic, pesticides, and even well-meant “orderliness.” Pro Igel exists to make these hidden risks visible and to replace uncertainty with knowledge.
The work of Pro Igel focuses on education, guidance, and hands-on support. Through carefully designed awareness campaigns, the organization informs the public about hedgehog-friendly gardening, safe use of equipment, and simple protective measures. Pro Igel advises municipalities, supports hedgehog rescue stations across Switzerland, and operates a national hedgehog helpline staffed by experienced experts who help people respond correctly when they encounter a hedgehog in need. Schools, communities, authorities, and private individuals all benefit from reliable, science-based information that leads to long-term protection of hedgehogs and their habitats.
